Highlights of Uruguay 2009 will be undoubtedly remembered as an unusual year for the economy. The serious international crisis, which worsened by the end of 2008, suggested a complex and uncertain scenario. The deterioration of all indicators in major economies around the world at the beginning of the year led to forecasts of a deep recession that would last at least throughout 2009. This was verified in developed and some emerging economies. However, emerging countries in Asia, principally China, showed significant resilience. |

Snapshot of the Uruguayan Financial System The Uruguayan Banking System as of December 31st of 2008 is composed of 2 state-owned and 12 private banks. It is worth noting that the information related to Banco Santander includes the expenses related to the acquisition of ABN AMRO that formally took place on December 27th, 2008. The Uruguayan Financial System also has 5 Financial Houses (institutions that can perform all kinds of financial intermediation operations, except those reserved for commercial and investment banks) and 4 External Financial Institutions (institutions that perform exclusively operations of intermediation between offer and demand of securities, money or precious metals located off-shore). |
